From the calm lagoons of the north to the wild beauty of Le Morne, these are the beaches worth travelling for.
Mauritius is surrounded by coral reef, which creates calm, clear lagoons along much of the coast. Each region has its own character, so it’s worth exploring beyond your hotel.
North: Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches
The north coast is lively, with restaurants, boat trips and calm water ideal for swimming. Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy are long, gently sloping beaches popular with families.
East: Belle Mare
Belle Mare offers kilometres of powder-white sand and a wide turquoise lagoon. It’s also close to Trou d’Eau Douce, the departure point for Île aux Cerfs trips.
West: Flic en Flac
Flic en Flac is one of the longest beaches on the island and famous for its sunsets. It’s a good base for exploring the south-west.
South-west: Le Morne
Below the dramatic Le Morne Brabant mountain, this beach and lagoon are among the most photographed places in Mauritius. Nearby, the Île aux Bénitiers cruise visits Crystal Rock.
South-east: Blue Bay
Close to the airport, Blue Bay is known for its marine park and clear water for snorkelling.
Getting around
Beaches are spread around the island, so a rental car or a private taxi is the easiest way to visit several in one trip.
