Thinking of hiring a car? Here are the road rules and local tips that make driving in Mauritius easy.
Driving is a great way to explore Mauritius at your own pace. Roads are generally in good condition, distances are short, and signs are in English. Here’s what to know before you set off.
The basics
- Traffic drives on the left, and you overtake on the right.
- Seat belts are compulsory for all passengers.
- Using a phone while driving is not allowed.
- Do not drink and drive. Limits are strictly enforced.
Driving licence
Visitors can usually drive with a valid licence from their home country. If your licence is not in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit. Check the latest requirements with us when you book.
Speed limits
Speed limits are lower than in many countries: typically 40 to 60 km/h in towns and villages, and up to 110 km/h on the motorway. Watch for speed cameras.
Local tips
- Roundabouts: give way to traffic coming from the right.
- Rush hour: roads around Port Louis are busy on weekday mornings and evenings.
- Mountain roads: the routes to Chamarel and Black River Gorges are narrow and winding, so take your time.
- Pedestrians and buses: be careful in villages and near bus stops.
- Parking: in Port Louis, use official car parks.
Best scenic drives
