Start in the capital, where old meets new. The market, dating from 1828, is the place to bargain for spices and souvenirs and taste Mauritian street food. Nearby are the Jummah Mosque, the Blue Penny Museum and Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Citadel looks out over the Champ de Mars racecourse.

In the old village of Pamplemousses, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden is home to 85 kinds of palm trees from around the world, enormous water lilies, spices, medicinal plants and native species.
